First Response Emergency Care
First Response Emergency Care
Level 3 (FREC 3).
A foundation in pre-hospital emergency care for aspiring first responders and those developing skills for event medical or other response settings.
What You’ll Learn
- Scene and patient assessment, communication and structured emergency care.
- Resuscitation, airway care, bleeding and trauma management within the taught scope.
- Recognising illness and applying skills through practical scenarios.
Qualification & Assessment
Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF). Assessment includes six mandatory practical assessments, one multiple-choice paper and one invigilated exam. Optional extended skills depend on the approved programme and clinical governance. The qualification includes independent preparation and study in addition to taught hours.
Entry Requirements
Learners must be at least 17 on the first training day. No prior qualification is required; basic first aid knowledge and suitable literacy are recommended. Discuss learning needs before booking.
Progression & Renewal
FREC 3 is valid for three years. It can support progression to FREC 4, subject to entry and CPD requirements. The qualification does not guarantee employment or authorise practice outside an employer’s clinical governance.
Develop Your Pre-Hospital Skills
First Response Emergency Care
Level 4 (FREC 4).
Build on FREC 3 with deeper assessment and emergency-care knowledge for developing pre-hospital practitioners.
What You’ll Learn
- Developing patient assessment and clinical observations.
- Care of illness, injury and more complex pre-hospital presentations.
- Applying clinical reasoning within your agreed scope of practice.
Qualification & Assessment
Qualsafe Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF). Assessment includes three practical assessments, two skills tests, three workbooks and two invigilated exams. Published total qualification time is 180 hours, including independent study; this is not simply a short classroom-only course.
Entry Requirements
You need to be at least 18, hold an in-date FREC 3 or Qualsafe-recognised equivalent, and provide the required CPD evidence. Send your certificate and CPD record before booking so we can check eligibility against the applicable specification.
Ongoing Development
Maintain your CPD portfolio and annual refresher training. Further progression depends on the next qualification’s entry requirements and employer expectations; FREC 4 does not confer paramedic registration.
